Ambition is Critical

What happens when a Connected cell hits town? You go from an orderly cell where people go about their Ingress business without too much fuss to one where people are overnighting at remote portals, hitting trig points at 3:59 am and scampering about town trying to get layers up over Cardiff. In other words… having a ball of a time!

The septicycle started quietly mid-week with Enlightened leading Resistance. Over a few days, Resistance chipped away at the Enlightened lead while agents threw local fields. As the weekend approached, the first major skirmishes began as the Bristol channel was cleared to enable some links to be thrown from across Somerset and Wiltshire to the Smalls Lighthouse. Traditional Ingress obstacles of squelchy muddy tracks, cows, creepy parks and scary information signs were encountered.

After a night of protecting the links to the Smalls, Saturday morning dawned. An intrepid agent had overnighted near a lighthouse to make the first fields of the day. Those were swiftly followed by a multi-layered fiesta of fields from the town of Ilfracombe. Between a hill (it doesn’t look that bad on the intel map…) and a portal at a chocolate shop (I hope they don’t get stuck there), the field team had meticulously thrown the fields for the 1pm checkpoint and a hefty bump in the Enlightened scores. 23+ layers and 1.5M MU, with about 60% counting towards the J-07 score. Fish MU can certainly add up!

Res stepped up to the mark and took the fields down. The first of a few times this septicycle!

Resistance then began to work their own field plans and put up a multi layer from Caerphilly and then Merthyr Tydfil. The bulk of the fields missed the initial checkpoint, but were threatening to score overnight. Step up two dedicated agents who drove through the night to get to Blorenge trig point for the 4 am checkpoint and flip down the fields a minute before they would have scored. Not content with that, they cleared Merthyr, before heading for their beds on Sunday morning…

The Resistance were not to be cowed, and stepped back up and rethrew the Merthyr fields on Sunday afternoon while blocking the Bristol channel fields being rethrown. This time, they were not to be denied and the fields hit checkpoint, causing the biggest spike in the septicycle. But they didn’t last, as yet another Enlightened agent stepped up to get the fields down, coordinating the timing so that blockers could be thrown.

The North of the cell was not ignored, with agents traveling across the border to ensure there were more green fields adding to the total.

The Bristol channel fields were not to be denied, and these were thrown again, taken down, and rethrown. Eventually, a Resistance agent visited Ilfracombe and took down the spine of the fields, only leaving the lighthouse coastal portal fields standing.

In a final push, the team determined to suppress Resistance fields and finish with a flourish by fielding Cardiff and tipping the score one more point in our favour. Much frantic key farming, machina killing, more key farming, key swapping and miles were travelled to throw up a gorgeous layered field over Cardiff in the early hours of the morning, 11 layers and 547,163 MU.

Nervously the team watched the final checkpoints come and go, waiting for the fightback from the Resistance that didn’t quite materialise. Final result – Enlightened won the septicycle and took 10.5 of the 15 available points, but more importantly had some great fun and will have some stories to tell down the years.

Many agents were involved, all contributing to the success. Some of the agents were;
